Vintage iPod Doubles as Cigarette Case

Posted by Japrax

A dead iPod isn't useless. It can help to hasten its owner's own death

What does one do with one's tired old HDD-based iPod now that it has been replaced with an iPhone, iPod Touch or teeny, tiny iPod Nano? If you haven't succumbed to peer pressure, and you still like to keep the tar level in your lungs topped up, you could make a cigarette case.

That's what Marianne Wilson did with her old broken white iPod. Despite being a non-smoker, Marianne saw that the iPod's empty shell was the perfect size for a handful of snouts, so she hollowed it out and installed some smokes in place of the electronic guts.

If I still smoked, I'd totally dig out an old iPod and turn it into a case like this. On the other hand, I might actually turn the old, easy-to-use iPod into a case and controller for the tiny, useless touch-screen Nano.

3G for iPod touch? ZTE Peel 3200 says yes.

Posted by Japrax

You're quite fond of your iPod touch. But often it would be nice to have wireless capability without being tied a WiFi hotspot. Have a look at the ZTE Peel 3200 available from Virgin Mobile. It's a case for your iPod touch that gives you a 3G data connection. No-contract $20 for 500 Mb per month with data through the Sprint 3G Network. It can also act as a mobile hotspot for one additional WiFi-enabled device, like a laptop. The fine print: compatible with 2nd and 3rd gen iPod touch only, but curiously NOT 4th gen. Great idea, but even my kids have the 4th gen. I suppose you could pick up a used 2nd or 3rd gen for less than retail and outfit it with this…?

Handmade iPod/iphone speaker dock

Posted by Japrax on Sunday, July 24, 2011

If you're looking to get yourself a pair of speakers that look different from your typical tower/rectangular shaped speakers, then this iPod and iPhone speaker that's pictured above might do the trick.

As you can imagine, the weird shape of the pipes play an important role in the delivery and quality of the sound, as it was designed that way on purpose. The central part of the dock houses an amplifier that the designed claims will be able to put out 15 watts per channel. The speakers use 2-inch full range drivers that are housed in the specially constructed pipes, supposedly capable of providing "exceptional" sound, delivering full stereo sound with solid lows and perfect highs.

The designer was pretty honest about the sound though, and claims that it will not be replacing your home theatre system anytime soon, but should provide pretty decent sound for general listening around the house.

At the moment there is only one unit available from the designer's Etsy page, which will cost you $299. Subsequent orders will be built-to-order with a two week construction time, so if you have the spare funds and you'd like a set of speakers that are somewhat unconventional, better hurry before someone else snaps them up!

White Apple iPod touch parts leak ahead of fall launch

Posted by Japrax

Parts for a new white Apple iPod touch have surfaced, courtesy of 9to5 Mac, suggesting that Apple has plans to release a new color scheme when it takes the wraps off its next-generation iPhone in late August or early September. The leaked images show the iPod touch's digitizer component, although it is currently unclear if the unit is real or not. The Cupertino-based company has already placed orders for the new color scheme and production is slated to begin next month, according to Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. While we are expecting the iPhone 5 to pack a dual-core processor, Apple may hold off on updating the hardware guts of the iPod touch entirely. “ iPhone and iPad have higher priority to get shared components of iOS devices when the supply chain is tight (especially after the Japan quake),” Kuo explained. “It means no spec update of iPod touch this year,” Kuo said. “The demand forecast is strong and Apple prefers to allocate shared components to iPhone and iPad.” Apple already offers a white iPad and a white iPhone, so the idea of a white iPod touch doesn't sound so far fetched. Read on for two more images of the white digitizer.

White iPod Touch on the way?

Posted by Japrax

If you're looking for a white iPod Touch, you might be in luck. The folks over at 9to5Mac received photographs of what is said to be the front panel of a white 4th generation iPod Touch. Since there's also no way to verify the authenticity of the panel through a photograph, there's no telling if it's real or fake. But there could be possible explanations to what this white front panel could be.

The white panel for the iPod touch could have been a panel that Apple was testing for the iPod Touch 4G but was left unreleased for unknown reasons. Other speculations put the white front as the a panel for the next generation iPod Touch - after all, there have been rumors of the next iPhone looking similar to the iPhone 4, and the iPod Touch usually follows the design of the iPhone. Could this be a clue to what the next iPhone will look like? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

But judging by mock-up renders of a white iPod Touch, the device does look pretty sweet. How many of you would pick up a white iPod Touch if it ever gets released?
